Introduction
Sgt. Poopers can clean up rat waste to protect your family and pets from pathogens. Both rat urine and feces are bio-hazardous due to the pathogens they may contain.
Rats often congregate on decks, porches and patios. Wherever you see rat droppings, you are looking at an area which is heavily splattered with infectious rat urine. Once an outdoor area, porch, patio, or deck has been marked, the urine acts like a five-star rodent review broadcast to the whole rat community letting them know "this area is safe from predators" and "this area can provide good food that is safe to eat." Rat urine is also an advertisement of sexual availability which attracts a growing number of rats to the area each night.
Rat urine is also responsible for the spread of several diseases including Leptospirosis. Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV) is another infectious disease (this one is viral) spread by rat urine. Human victims can experience long-term effects of lymphocytic choriomeningitis, while others may experience only temporary discomfort. Other diseases spread by rat urine or feces include Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, and salmonellosis. For this reason you should not go barefoot nor touch rat infested areas. Sgt. Poopers can treat the area and make it safe for bare feet.
Norway Rats
Norway rats are also called sewer rats, brown rats, wharf rats, and water rats. If rats are infesting your deck, patio, or porch area they are probably Norway rats. An inspection of their feces makes it easy to identify which species of rat you have at your property.
- Description: Brown shaggy coat, scaly tail shorter than head + body, small ears, blunt noses, small eyes, larger and fatter than roof rats
- Distribution: all 50 states, roof rats are more dominant in coastal areas
- Habitat: Underground tunnels near foundations and under shrubs
- Activity: Mostly nocturnal
- Water: Norway rats need 0.5 to 1.0 oz of water daily, which they can get from sprinkler systems, creeks, ponds, dog bowls, bird baths, or swimming pools
- Feces: shiny black, about 0.75 inch long, capsule shaped with blunt ends, 40+ pellets per day per rat
Roof Rats
Roof rats are also called black rats or ship rats. That's a photo of a roof rat at the top of this page. As their name implies, roof rats are natural climbers and infest attics.
- Description: Smooth black coat, tail longer than head + body, large ears, pointy noses, large eyes, more slender and smaller than Norway rats.
- Distribution: Mostly in coastal states
- Habitat: Attics and trees
- Activity: Mostly nocturnal
- Water: Norway rats need 0.5 to 1.0 oz of water daily, which they can get from sprinkler systems, creeks, ponds, dog bowls, bird baths, or swimming pools
- Feces: 0.25 to 0.5 inch long, with pointy ends, 40+ pellets per day
Disinfecting Surfaces
Like Canadian geese, rats have found human civilization wonderfully hospitable, so much so that they infest the attics and properties of homes across Dallas. Many neighborhoods are plagued by rats. At Sgt. Poopers, we can eliminate any outdoor rat problem within a few days and without using any chemical toxins, poisons, traps, or unsightly bait stations that don't work. Everything we do at Sgt. Poopers is safe for people, pets, and animals.
Due to the toxicity of rat waste, we cannot just remove it and call it "done." The job isn't complete until we also disinfect each area where their waste hit the ground.
To do that, we use a cutting-age, food-grade, EPA-approved and NSF-certified hospital disinfectant to break the chain of infection at the molecular level. The chemistry is non-toxic to humans, pets, and beneficial insects. It reacts with sulfur atoms in the amino-acid proteins that form the membrane of bacteria and viruses. This reaction causes 99.999% of harmful microbes to rupture and die in seconds.
When Ebola struck Dallas in 2014, this is what hazmat workers used to successfully disinfect the contaminated spaces. It is an EPA-registered antimicrobial that meets CDC criteria for use against Ebola, yet this same disinfectant is so safe you can wash your hands with it (which we do frequently). It is non-toxic, non-flammable, non-hazardous, and causes no respiratory nor skin irritation in animals or humans. It is certified as no rinse required. Respirators or rubber gloves are not required for application. Our disinfectant is simply one of the best, safest and most effective disinfectants there is. And we're pretty proud of it.
Deodorizing Rat Markers
Our antimicrobial deodorizer destroys the cause of malodor by oxidizing the microscopic organisms that cause it. Noxious odors are caused by bacteria. By destroying bacteria, there is nothing left to create odor.
People perceive certain odors as offensive since the human body recognizes them as a warning against potential disease. The smell of a animal feces or urine registers as "offensive" to us because the smell indicates the proximity a serious health risk. After thousands of years of evolution, your body knows.
Our EPA-registered non-toxic odor eliminator neutralizes the source of odors on a molecular level. Other odor products can cause allergic or asthmatic reactions. Ours contains no scents, perfumes, nor fragrances and is fit for the most sensitive allergy suffers. It’s also hypoallergenic, non-hazardous, non-irritating, and contains no volatile compounds (VOCs) to pollute the beautiful atmosphere over the city of Dallas.
Keeping Rats Out
The waste from most animals should be considered dangerous to humans and pets because it usually is. Sgt. Poopers can help deal with any kind of waste removal for pets or wild animals including raccoons, squirrels, rats, mice, possums, geese, bats, feral cats, stray dogs, or migrating birds.
At Sgt. Poopers, our specialty is conservation, not just waste removal, so we can provide solutions that other providers can't do. When it comes to wildlife waste control, we have the means to disinfect and kill the dangerous germs in their waste that make it a biohazard. As part of our mission of conservation we provide unique protocols that can help humanely exclude wildlife from an area so they cease to intrude in homes or yards.
Our disinfectant eradicates the effect of urine by which rats mark an area (like your garage, deck or porch) as "safe." Then we apply an all-natural essential oil to create a barrier that rats and mice will not cross. It smells great to humans and does not bother dogs or cats. Rat Waste Removal Prices
Our pricing for wildlife waste removal varies by project. Price quotes are free, based on the size of the area, number of services, amount of waste needing to be removed, plus the frequency of our visits. The more frequently we clean, the less we charge for each visit. We can clean daily, weekly, monthly, or on-demand. While many of our regular services start at $11.95 per week, rat waste removal is more hazardous requiring full respirators and gloves during clean up. Disinfection and dust control measures are also required to prevent airborne pathogens from being stirred up while cleaning.
