Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation Control

Radio frequency or RF radiation comes from modern wireless devices like Internet routers, Smart Meters, Wi-Fi base stations, Bluetooth, cordless phones, cell phone, tablets, computers, games, flat-screen TVs, Amazon Fire Stick, baby monitors, cell towers and more including microwave ovens. In fact, radio frequency radiation is microwave radiation different only from radar in its power level. That's why the original microwave oven sold by the Amana company was called a "Radarange."

RF radiation also comes from military and weather radar installations if, unfortunately, you live near one of these facilities.

Big Telecom admits their products are harmful. For example, on an iPhone go to Settings > General > About > Legal > RF Exposure. They state if you put a cell phone next to your head or carry it in a pocket, you are exceeding the limit for radiation exposure. Moreover, an "exposure dose" is different from an "absorbed dose." A child using a cell phone absorbs far more radiation than an adult.

When we conduct our Radiation Lockdown, we go to great pains to detect and measure all radio frequency fields that might be affecting your health. They are measured in microwatts per meter squared (µW/m²), or volts per meter (V/m).

Electric Field Radiation Testing

Electric fields (and magnetic fields) are manifestations of the electromagnetic force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature.

Energy radiating outward from any source is "radiation." Different names were applied to the various frequencies before scientists realized it was all part of the same thing — a broad range or "spectrum" of radiant energy. As the frequency changes however, the way radiation interacts with matter changes. In the band we call "radio," AM signals are blocked by objects, while FM signals pass right through. Midway up the spectrum, visible light is perfectly healthy, but ultraviolet damages DNA. And so it goes. Microwave were originally used for radar and for covert weapons. Somehow this covert weaponry now powers the wireless devices next to our reproductive organs.

Whether we experience radiation as FM radio, infrared (heat), visible light, ultraviolet radiation from the sun, x-rays at the dentist, or gamma radiation from Fukushima, these are all different forms of the same thing — some, harmful and some,  safe.

Electric fields are Extremely Low Frequency radiation caused by electric voltage (pressure) in unshielded wiring which causes it to broadcast energy like an antenna. This kind of radiation is detectable with an AM radio from sources like electronic equipment, appliances, devices, adapters, etc. Because the human body is itself an excellent antenna, it receives radiation from electric fields which creates a flow of electricity directly on your skin, which we measure directly with a specially grounded electrical meter. Our measurement is measured in volts (V) AC on skin. This is the most accurate way to measure the presence of electric fields that may be affecting your health.

Magnetic Field Radiation Testing

Many studies have linked magnetic fields to cancers, childhood leukemia, and other adverse health effects. Magnetic fields are caused by flowing electrical current moving through mis-wired circuits, accidentally electrified water pipes, electric power lines, motors, kitchen appliances, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, outlets, lights and switches, computers, screens, fluorescent lights, etc. If the voltage is low, the magnetic field may be negligible. Magnetic fields are measured in milligauss (abbreviation: mG) using a gaussmeter.

On our Radiation Lockdown, we measure magnetic fields in two bands, ELF (extremely low frequency) and in VLF (very low frequency). ELF refers to electrical appliances plugged directly into electrical outlets, like incandescent bulbs, paper shredders, kitchen appliances, refrigerators, fans, and heaters. VLF refers to devices that operate on higher frequencies like electronics, TVs, laptops, desktop computers, CFL or LED bulbs, fluorescent lights, printers, and DVRs.

Dirty Electricity Radiation Testing

A significant cause of electromagnetic radiation — also called electrosmog — in the home or work environment is "dirty electricity." This dirty electricity turns the electrical wiring within the walls of your home into an antenna that can broadcast any of the three types of electromagnetic radiation affecting everyone in your home, so it's an important thing to get under control.

The electromagnetic fields created by dirty electricity in your wiring can result in sleep disturbances; headaches; fatigue; tinnitus (ringing or buzzing sounds in the ears); mental confusion; impaired reasoning ability; forgetfulness; learning disabilities; concentration difficulties; decreased intelligence; heart arrhythmia; moodiness; damage to the nervous, endocrine and immune systems; and increased risk of serious chronic illnesses such as cancer.

Our Radiation Lockdown service includes testing for dirty electricity. We provide instructions on how solve any problems we find. Some issues we can fix ourselves on the spot, like a lamp plugged in backwards. Occasionally there are issues that may require a qualified electrician. 

Electrosmog comes from various electric devices around the home, plus it can be generated by improper electrical wiring — common, especially in older homes. Most homes have at least two or three miswired circuits in addition to older lamps and extension cords that may be plugged in backwards. Some of these mistakes are easy to fix while some can take a bit more work to debug.

When electricity leaks down the wrong wire or into a water pipe, the whole length of that wire or pipe can generate large magnetic fields — as big as the room or even the entire house — very unhealthy! Other causes include rheostats, Smart Meters;  dimmer switches; CFL, LED, and fluorescent lights; solar power systems; charging systems for electric cars; and wireless transmitters that load signals directly into copper wiring. Electricity coming from the power company is sometimes dirty when it arrives. Stray signals create fluctuations in frequency, voltage, and other aspects of electricity that cause electrical wires to transmit electromagnetic radiation throughout your living environment.

These fluctuations can be heard on older AM radios as static. In the 1960s and before, virtually all electric appliances used 120 volts at a frequency of 60 Hz (cycles per second). Pretty much everything could be plugged directly into electrical outlets. Today, most electronic equipment requires a small black "adapter." Those adapters are today plugged into outlets throughout your house and they can also cause dirty electricity.

Ionizing Radiation Testing

In addition to mapping the radio frequency (RF) and electromagnetic (EMF) radiation throughout your house or office, when we conduct our Radiation Lockdown we can also check for radioactive (ionizing) radiation which is rare, but more common than you think. Radon gas, certain antiques, ceramic tiles, old glassware called "uranium glass," even granite countertops can occasionally be radioactive. Radon, which is an inert but radioactive byproduct of uranium decay is the second leading cause of lung cancer. It is a naturally-occurring gas that seeps up from the ground and gets trapped inside your home.

Ionizing radiation and electromagnetic radiation are really two versions of the same thing. All radiation is a spectrum that ranges from radio at the lowest energy levels, up  to gamma at the top.

We use a highly sophisticated Geiger-Muller radiation counter that detects alpha, beta, and gamma particles.

We include testing for radioactivity as part of our Radiation Lockdown because we want to ensure your home is safe. A radiation-free home is important to ensure good health. We will check each room, plus any specific glassware, ceramics, antiques or other items you suspect might be radioactive.

Radioactivity is much less of a threat yet is not unheard of even in Dallas, Texas. Common radioactive sources include cancer medications; smoke detectors; fluorescent lights; zircon, beryl, tourmaline and topaz gemstones; lantern mantles (treated with thorium and beryllium); some porcelain teeth and veneers; radium-dial clocks and watches; tritium gun sights, compasses, watch faces; recycled (contaminated) metals; pottery; granite countertops; natural stone walls; ceramic bathroom tiles made with uranium oxide and ceramic dinnerware like Fiestaware produced before 1974. Uranium oxide and sodium urinate were used in glazes to produce colors like the famous orange-red Fiestaware.

Radioactivity is caused by radioactive materials inside the home, radioactivity itself usually means x-rays and gamma rays. This kind of high-energy radiation exists at the other end of the electromagnetic spectrum from radio and microwave radiation. The spectrum runs from radio waves at the lowest energy level, up to microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet light, x-rays, and gamma rays.
